Adopted, refugee.
Mount Pinatubo made us leave.
Navy man said ya could come with me.
We left swiftly, but my heart still in the Philippines 🇵🇭.
Different from my family.
Like, literally, I am the Black Sheep.
Felt like a misfit, like Caskey.
As far as the eye could see.
They were all so different from me.
Same roots, different branches on every tree.
Watch how they sway in the breeze.
Grew up in SoCal then moved to the city they call Windy.
Concrete jungle, the winds are steady blowing.
Ye said that them lights be flashing.
Pedal to metal, whole lotta crashing.
Lupe spoke on the fact they fueled that, gasoline.
Nobody told that we are Kings and Queens.
You can’t be royalty if you don’t know what it mean.
Lost a lot of my homies to guns and lean.
Buried one of my girls when I was 14.
Always asked why Keisha had to leave.
Sometimes, I’m selfish, asking why it could’t be me.
Took a dna test on Ancestry.
To see if we could connect with some long last family.
“I am an adopted, refugee, dad was in the Navy,
left my mama in the Philippines, think you could help me maybe?”
Most of them replied, “I don’t know you so bother me.”
Sent them all an apology, explaining.
“Not trying to bother but we’re family, according to our biology.”
“Would like to talk to learn more about our family” is how the rest of the letter reads.
My heart used to feeling hurt but in that moment, it felt like my heart broke and started to bleed.
But, I can’t let that get the best of me.

Maybe cause he’s a Wasian emo,
Flip NEMO and you got OMEN.
Do you understand all the treasures that you’re holding?
And when you feel pressure, where are you going?
Volcanic eruption like emotions be exploding.
Don’t pull your trigger, keeping your peace more important.
Like you get hurt and what you gon do,
If no one wants to come and take care of you.
Why eating and drinking pucked foods?
Knowing dang well they ain’t good for you.
